Spring Start-Up Guide: Getting Your Equipment Ready After Winter

After a long Canadian winter, your equipment has been sitting idle in cold, damp conditions—exactly the environment that leads to fuel breakdown, dry seals, and starting issues.

A quick, proper spring start-up can mean the difference between a smooth first job and frustrating downtime.

2-Stroke Equipment

Fresh fuel is critical

Old fuel is the #1 cause of poor performance.

  • Drain any leftover fuel from last season
  • Mix fresh fuel with the correct oil ratio
  • Use quality 2-stroke oil to protect your engine

Spark plug check

  • Inspect for carbon buildup
  • Clean or replace as needed
  • A worn plug can make starting difficult

Air filter maintenance

  • Clean foam filters and lightly oil them
  • Replace paper filters if clogged

Fuel system inspection

  • Check fuel lines and primer bulbs for cracking or stiffness
  • Replace if needed

Carburetor performance

If the unit is:

  • Hard to start
  • Running rough
  • Stalling

…it may need a carb clean due to fuel residue buildup.

4-Stroke Equipment

Change the oil

Oil can absorb moisture during storage.

  • Drain old oil
  • Refill with the correct grade

Refresh the fuel system

  • Remove stale fuel
  • Refill with fresh gas
  • Consider adding stabilizer for longer-term use

Spark plug and ignition

  • Inspect and replace if needed
  • Ensure a strong, consistent spark

Air filter check

  • Clean or replace depending on condition

Battery check (if applicable)

  • Charge, load test or replace weak batteries
  • Clean terminals if corroded

Quick Checks for All Equipment

Visual inspection

  • Loose fasteners
  • Cracked components
  • Signs of wear or rodent damage

Lubrication

  • Grease moving parts where required
  • Check gearboxes and drive components

First start

  • Expect a few extra pulls or cranking time
  • Allow the unit to warm up before use
